15th January 2022 - Hellingly 2XV v St Francis
Loss 21-31

Momentous day for the club with 3 father and son partnerships taking to the field!

Hellingly saw 3 father and son partnerships taking to the field for this match.

The weather was overcast and dry with hardly any wind, but the pitch was still very sticky under boot.

1st Half

Points on the board came quickly for the visitors scoring a try in the 4th minute but were unable to earn the conversion points (0-5). Hellingly wasted little time in their reply in the 9th minute with a try from Huw Jones and converted by Matt Dawber (7-5). The battle was now well and truly on with the physicality being tested at lineouts and scrums, with some having to be reset and not being helped by the sticky pitch that hadn’t dried out enough since last weekend. In the 20th minute St Francis found the try line and conversion bring the score to 7-12. Ball possession was won and lost in equal measure by both teams determined to raise the score, but St Francis succeeded in a converted try in the 32nd minute (7-19) and another try 6 minutes later but conversion missed bringing the half time score to 7-24. After 44 minutes on the stopwatch, there had been 8 scrums with 3 resets, 10 lineouts, advantage give for 11 and advantage against 11.

2nd Half

The second half pace from kick-off was fast and saw St Francis secure a try in the 3rd minute and converted (7-31). Within 5 minutes Charlie Milner found the try line and Matt Dawber conversion bringing the score to 14-31. At the 18th minute, Hellingly saw a yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin-bin. The way Hellingly consolidated themselves was excellent and the remainder of the game saw some great phases of play, and St Francis couldn’t find a way through. Hellingly perseverance paid off in the 42nd minute with another try by Huw Jones and successfully converted by Matt Dawber bring the final score to 21-31 at full time. The 2nd half saw 9 scrums with 1 reset, 6 lineouts, advantage given for 10 and advantage against 9. They may not have won but should be very proud of their 2nd half performance!
